Wildlife officials kill mountain lion near Deadwood
DEADWOOD — State wildlife officials shot and killed a young mountain lion Tuesday after it was spotted Monday near Deadwood’s Welcome Center carrying a dead deer down the walking path.
Trenton Haffley, regional terrestrial resources supervisor for the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, said the 1.5-year-old male was located by Jack Alexander, the state houndsman, and his lion dogs the following day halfway up White Rocks, just outside of town and was shot.
Haffley said the lion weighed 77 pounds an ideal weight for its age, and seemed to be healthy.
