September 27, 2018

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The city of Amsterdam has won $10 million to overhaul its downtown as the latest winner of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s downtown revitalization competition.

The contest was created to help local communities improve their core neighborhoods and make them more appealing for visitors, residents and businesses alike.

Earlier winners have used the funds to improve parks and open space, upgrade roads and transportation networks and support efforts to bring new residential and commercial developments downtown.

This is the third round of the contest. Other recent winners include Saranac Lake, Watertown, Batavia, Rome and the South Bronx.

Amsterdam is located in Montgomery County in the Mohawk Valley. Mayor Michael Villa says his city is honored to win the funds, and is eager to put them to good use.
