7 Feared Dead in Helicopter Crash

June 9, 1999

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) _ A sightseeing helicopter crashed near a glacier Wednesday, and seven people were feared dead, the Fire Department said.

The helicopter went down near Herbert Glacier, 20 miles north of Juneau, Fire Chief Mike Doyle said.

Juneau is a popular cruise ship destination, and tourists frequently hire helicopters to view the area’s spectacular glaciers.

Doyle said emergency crews were headed for the scene but did not expect to find any survivors. A hospital was told by fire officials not to expect any injured people.

Last year, a helicopter on a sightseeing trip over Juneau collided with a small plane. One person aboard the plane was killed.
