Chief of Sri Lankan Military to Retire

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ The commander of the government forces fighting the an uprising of Tamil separatists is retiring, a government spokesman said today.

Lt. Gen. Tissa Weeratunge, who commanded the army until last May, has been head of the new Joint Operations Command responsible for military action in the troubled northeast, where minority Tamil rebels are fighting to establish a homeland.

Senior governmental sources said Weeratunge is likely to be given a diplomatic post.
