Body found at scene of Decatur home destroyed by fire
DECATUR, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a body was discovered in the rubble of a Decatur home more than 14 hours after it was destroyed by fire.
The Herald & Review reports the body was found around 10:40 p.m. Friday.
Homeowner Robert Harden said he left for work around 7 a.m. Friday, about an hour before firefighters were called to the home. Harden said he last saw his wife, Bertha Harden, in the house and that he’d been unable to reach her.
Firefighters were unable to enter the home when they arrived Friday morning because of the extent of the fire and condition of the home.
Decatur Fire Capt. Kirk Riley said late Friday he couldn’t confirm whether the person found was Bertha Harden.
He said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
