Principal, resource officer knocked to floor during fight at Rolesville HS

January 11, 2019

Authorities are investigating after a fight that broke out a Rolesville High School resulted in the principal and school resource officer being knocked to the floor Wednesday morning.

In a note sent home to parents, Principal Dhedra Lassiter said that the fight broke out between students in the cafeteria just before school started Wednesday morning.

Lassiter said she joined other staff members in attempting to stop the fight and she and the officer were “inadvertently bumped” and fell to the floor.

Video of the incident shows Lassiter attempting to pull apart several fighting students before she is knocked down. After she falls, the students continue to fight and several students can be seen stepping over her while she is on the floor.

“Federal student privacy laws prohibit us from sharing specific information about students, but you can be assured that Rolesville police are investigating any possible criminal actions,” Lassiter said in the letter to parents. “I am working with WCPSS security to determine appropriate disciplinary action for the students involved.”

Wednesday’s incident is one of several to be captured on camera at Rolesville High School in the past year.

A video posted to Twitter in January 2017 showed a student at the school being slammed to the floor by a school resource officer.

The student, Jasmine Darwin, said she was attempting to break up a fight between her sister and another student when the officer came from behind and slammed her to the ground.

The officer, Ruben De Los Santos, eventually resigned from his position and did not face charges in connection with the incident.

Another video posted online in March showed two boys involved in a fistfight in a stairwell at the school.

The incident prompted Rolesville Mayor Frank Eagles to call a meeting to address violence in the school.
