Mustangs host Mountain View in NIAA basketball today
PARKER, Ariz. — Mustangs fans may get to see their two big post players for the first time this season when Needles hosts Mountain View in NIAA 2A South basketball action in The Corral today. The junior varisty tips off at 3, the varsity at 6 p.m.
Semaj Howell, returning to the court this week, led Needles’ scoring with 13 including a 3-for-5 performance from the free throw line. Doogie Harvey, not seen since being named NIAA 2A State Most Valuable Player on the defensive line and the south league’s Defensive Player of the Year in football, added four. Harvey scored four.
With their two big horses back in harness the Mustangs played an inside game most of the night in the 59-40 loss to Parker. There were three baskets made from beyond the three-point line compared to 13 two-point field goals. Nathan Rodriguez made two of those treys in his 12-point outing; Dawsen Yeager made the other one in his total of five for the night’s work. Trevyn Diaz and Andre Smith added a deuce apiece; Diaz capped it with a 2-for-2 appearance at the charity stripe to bring the Mustangs’ free throw success to 63 percent.
