Rep. Pepper Hospitalized
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Rep. Claude Pepper, D-Fla., said Saturday he had a ″small knot″ over a scar removed and that he expects to be released from Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Monday.
Pepper, at 88 the oldest member of Congress, said he had the operation on Friday after the growth over a hernia scar was discovered while he was ″undergoing routine tests at the end of the Congress.″
″I will be out of the hospital on Monday and back on the campaign trail next week,″ he said, adding that he had some friends in to visit on Saturday night and enjoyed ″some wine with my dinner.″
Jim Stueve, a spokesman for the hospital, said Pepper was admitted for ″medical observation″ and referred further queries to the congressman’s staff.
Charles Nichols, an aide on the Rules Committee that Pepper chairs, said the congressman would be out campaigning during the week for Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis.
