Secretary of state seeks input on Lake County precinct plan

July 6, 2018

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Indiana’s secretary of state is seeking Lake County voters’ input on how to advance a plan to consolidate small voting precincts in the northwestern Indiana county.

Connie Lawson said Tuesday her office wants to hear from voters “about how to make this consolidation work best for you.”

A 2017 law required Lake County to develop a plan to consolidate voting precincts with fewer than 600 active voters. Lawmakers this year amended the law to give the Indiana Election Commission until July 1 to identify those precincts. The Post-Tribune reports the legislation says that if the commission cannot adopt a plan that duty will fall to the secretary of state.

A lawsuit that challenged the consolidation law was put on hold because it couldn’t contest a plan that didn’t yet exist.
