May 13, 2019

PEDRO, Ohio —Young anglers tested their hand at reeling in the catch of the day Saturday as Wayne National Forest’s Ironton Ranger District hosted its 13th annual JAKES Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Vesuvius in Pedro, Ohio.

The free fishing derby for children included a hot dog lunch and was hosted jointly by the National Wild Turkey Federation, Izaak Walton League of America and the Pedro Bass Club.

Lawrence County’s NWTF South Hills Longbeards Chapter also brought along the Take Aim trailer, a fully equipped trailer that transports everything needed to set up an outdoor airgun range and teach the basics of range safety.

JAKES, a program developed by the National Wild Turkey Federation, stands for “Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship” and is dedicated to informing, educating and involving youth in wildlife conservation and the wise stewardship of natural resources.
