Officers Halt Woman With Gas Can
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) _ A woman allegedly intent on setting herself and her 11-year-old son on fire was arrested before she could ignite a gallon of gasoline inside her car, authorities said Saturday.
Karen Dib, 43, was booked for investigation of felony child endangerment after the encounter with police Friday.
Authorities said Dib called her family to tell them she planned to kill herself and her son. A ranger found her and her son in the car at Sugarloaf State Park.
Dib had a lighter in her hand and a gallon container of gasoline. When the ranger approached, Dib pushed her son out of the car and told him to run.
Dib tried to drive away as several officers arrived, but the road had been blocked and she drove into a ditch. Dib lit a rag sticking out of the gasoline can, but officers were able to overpower her and put out the rag before the gas ignited.
The boy was found walking on a nearby highway. He was unharmed.
