Despite Egypt’s turmoil, Qatar sends gas shipment
DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Qatar says it has sent the second shipment of natural gas to Egypt despite the turmoil engulfing the North African country and the woes of Qatar’s Islamist allies there.
The Qatar News Agency reported Tuesday that the shipment left the oil-rich Gulf state Aug. 9. It’s the second of five shipments Qatar had promised the ousted President Mohammad Morsi’s government.
The energy is to help Egypt’s overburdened networks during peak summer use.
Relations between Qatar and the new military-backed leadership in Egypt have chilled after the July 3 military coup and the crackdown on Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.
Qatar is a key backer of the Brotherhood in the region. It gave Morsi’s government around $8 billion in aid over the past year.
QNA did not say how big the shipment was.
