NEW YORK (AP) _ Boston left-hander Alan Embree decided to take a $5.5 million, two-year contract to stay with the Red Sox and Minnesota right-hander Bob Wells filed for free agency.
Embree gets $2.75 million in each of the next two seasons under Tuesday’s deal, and Boston has a $3 million option for 2005.
He went 3-4 with an 0.94 ERA in 35 appearances for the San Diego, which traded him to Boston on June 23. He was 1-2 with a 2.97 ERA for the Red Sox.
``I’m going to do anything they ask me to do,″ Embree said. ``I would love to challenge myself. If you say, ‘No, I want to be a middle reliever for the rest of my career’ _ boy, that’s underachieving.″
Wells was 2-1 with a 5.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances for the Twins.
Arizona exercised a $1.75 million option on left-hander Mike Myers, 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA and four saves in 69 games this year.
Twenty-four more players are potentially eligible to file for free agency by Monday’s deadline.
