FITCHBURG -- When Monty Tech student Lillie Hall heard about the death of Worcester firefighter Christopher Roy at the beginning of the month, she thought about his 9-year-old daughter, Ava.

Hall, a junior who is the daughter of a police officer and has a grandfather and uncles who serve as firefighters, sympathized. She wanted to help.

“Knowing they could go to work everyday and something like that could happen is hard,” said Hall, who is from Templeton. “I’m 17 and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like without them.”

Roy, 36, died Dec. 9 from injuries sustained battling a five-alarm house fire.

He considered Ava “the light of his life,” according to his obituary.

Hall worked with about 20 cosmetology students to collect toys and money for Ava. They have raise more than $1,000 so far and will continue to gather donations until Jan. 11.

The money will go to the Ava Roy Fund, which was established by Worcester Firefghters IAFF Local 1009.

She said the financial support can help Ava with her future, like paying for college.

“That fund will be with her for her whole life,” Hall said.

She and students from her cosmetology shop started asking for donations from school staff whose hair they styled for “staff nights” at Monty Tech’s salon shop, Hall said.

At first, they used the staff nights to raise money for a senior trip in New York, she said, but together decided to give half of the funds to Ava.

Hall talked to the school superintendent and principal and got help to expand the fundraising to the community, she said.

Monty Tech put out a Facebook post on Dec. 21 telling people about her efforts and how to donate toys or money to Ava.

“It was nice to know people support me and my idea,” Hall said.

When classes start after New Year’s, she hopes her shop can host another staff night to round out the last week of fundraising.

Hall said she wants to hand-deliver the toys to the Worcester Fire Department.

Donatons can be dropped off or mailed to the school: Monty Tech, Attention Lillie Hall, 1050 Westminster St., Fitchburg, 01420.

Checks can be made to the Ava Roy Fund and can mailed to the Worcester Fire Department Credit Union at 34 Glennie St., Worcester, 01605.
