BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Mexican journalist Marcela Turati will be in Kentucky this month to accept an award for courageous international reporting.

Turati will receive the Fleischaker/Greene Award from Western Kentucky University's School of Journalism & Broadcasting on Sept. 27.

The school says in a news release that Turati is a reporter for the magazine Proceso, covering human rights, social development and the impact of drug violence and its victims. She is also the recipient of the 2013 Louis Lyons Award for conscience and integrity in journalism, granted by the Nieman Foundation at Harvard.

She is also involved in training journalists and strengthening investigative journalism in Mexico.

The Nieman Foundation described her as a "standard-bearer for the journalists who have risked their lives to document the devastating wave of violence in Mexico."
