Darrell Gwynn, Ed McCulloch and Bob Glidden posted event-reco
PHOENIX (AP) _ Darrell Gwynn, Ed McCulloch and Bob Glidden posted event-record times in each of the three professional divisions during Friday’s opening-day qualifying for the fourth annual NHRA Castrol GTX Fallnationals at Firebird International Raceway.
Gwynn, of Miami, claimed the top spot in Top Fuel qualifying with a quarter-mile time of 5.121 seconds, driving his Budweiser.Quaker State dragster at 272.56 mph. Eddie Hill, from Wichita Falls, Texas, was second with a run of 5.132 and 274.22.
McCulloch, of Hemet, Calif., driver of the Miller High Life Special Oldsmobile Cutlass, posted the quickest time among Funny Car competitors with a 5.458-second run at 267.30. Kenny Bernstein of Dallas is second with a run of 5.523 and 266.19.
Glidden, from Whiteland, Ind., and the defending Fallnationals champion in Pro Stock, easily claimed the No. 1 spot with a 7.441-second run at 186.68 in his Motorcraft Ford Probe. Warren Johnson, from Duluth, Ga., stands second at 7.476 and 186.72.
Competition continues Saturday with the final two rounds of qualifying. Final eliminations in the $605,250 event begins Sunday morning.
The Fallnationals is round 15 of the 16-race Winston Drag Racing Series.
