Elena Delle Donne named to U.S. roster for FIBA Women’s World Cup

September 19, 2018

Washington Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne was one of 12 players named to the final U.S. roster for the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Delle Donne was a finalist for the WNBA MVP award after averaging 20.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in 2018. Her Mystics reached the WNBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Delle Donne injured her left knee during a playoff game in late August. She only missed one game for Washington but was limited in what she could do when she returned to the court.

The star forward will be teammates with three players from the Seattle Storm, who recently swept Washington for the WNBA title: Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd.

The FIBA Women’s World Cup will begin this weekend and run through Sept. 30 in Tenerife, Spain.

The U.S. is the defending champion, looking for its third consecutive gold medal and 10th gold medal in the history of the competition. The team’s first game is Saturday against Senegal; their other opponents in the group stage are China and Latvia.
