NACS moves ahead with elementary bid

November 6, 2018

Northwest Allen County Schools leaders Monday checked off another milestone toward building a new, voter-backed elementary school: approving a $25.7 million construction bid.

The brief school board meeting also included ratification of the 2018-19 contract with the Northwest Allen County Education Association.

A groundbreaking date isn’t yet set for the new school. The district will work with the architect and Mosaic Building Solutions to determine timing, business manager Bill Mallers said.

Mosaic Building Solutions was awarded the construction contract with a total bid of $25,744,660.

Funding is through the 3 million in safety and efficiency improvements.

The school is planned for a soybean field along Hathaway Road between Bethel Road and Indiana 3, or Lima Road.

Superintendent Chris Himsel said after the meeting that he is eager for construction to start.

Of the new teacher contract, Himsel said eligible educators’ salaries will increase by about 1,700.

Per state law, teachers receiving raises are rated effective or highly effective, Himsel said.

In a statement, the education association, or NACEA, thanked the school board and district administration for their efforts in the contract cycle.

“While the NACEA would like the state of Indiana to allocate more value and financial support towards educating future generations, the NACS administration and the NACEA continue to manage resources in a sustainable manner,” the education association said.

“The goal of the NACEA negotiations team is to work with the administration to support a contract that retains, values, motivates and fairly compensates the educators of our NACS community.”
