German archbishop: remarriage debate not over
BERLIN (AP) — A top German church official says he isn’t giving up on an initiative to allow some divorced but remarried Catholics to receive Communion after the Vatican slapped down his diocese’s challenge to church teaching.
Freiburg Archbishop Robert Zollitsch was quoted Sunday as telling the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that “it is important to look for a viable way” to address the issue.
The Vatican’s chief doctrine official said in October there is no way for Catholics who divorce and remarry to receive Communion unless they get an annulment. That came after Zollitsch’s diocese issued guidelines explaining how such Catholics could get around the rule.
Zollitsch said that most responses had been positive and Freiburg’s ideas would be submitted to a church meeting on the family next October.
