Slick road conditions, accidents close I-91

January 30, 2019

There are a number of accidents caused - in part - by slippery road conditions.

The State Department of Transportation is reporting that northbound Interstate 91 is closed between Exits 28 and 29 in Hartford because of a multi-vehicle crash that occurred around 4 a.m.

Shortly after 5 a.m., DOT is reporting more than a mile of heavy congestion in the area as traffic is being detoured off the highway.

The roadway is expected to reopen within two hours. Traffic is getting congesting in the area, officials said.

While major state roads have been treated, there remain slick spots especially on exit/ramps and bridges.

Temperatures will continue to drop throughout the day. Since midnight, there has been more than a 10-degree temperature drop. Temperatures are in the low 20s in northern Connecticut; the shoreline has the warmest temps with 31 degrees in New Haven and 28 at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford.

While much of the state received little snow overnight, the rain that fell has frozen because of a drop in temperatures.

Local roads also remain slick.

State Police advise drivers to slow down, leave plenty of distance between vehicles and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
