Phoenix win at Columbus on last-second field goal
COLUMBUS — Senior quarterback Micah Kieselhorst threw a pair of touchdown passes to junior receiver Nathan de Galley and sophomore kicker Yuri Soloviyov kicked the game-winning field goal in the closing seconds as Luther Prep’s football team defeated Columbus 17-14 in a Capitol North game on Friday.
Columbus (1-7, 0-4 Capitol North) scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns to take leads of 6-0 and 14-7.
Sophomore running back Caden Brunell rushed for a 4-yard score to put the host Cardinals up 6-0 following a lost fumble by the Phoenix on the first play from scrimmage.
Luther Prep (5-3, 2-1) answered on Kieselhorst’s 56-yard scoring pass to de Galley to make it 7-6, but Columbus regained the lead on Brunell’s 60-yard TD pass to senior receiver Trent Casper and the Cardinals converted a two-point conversion attempt to take a 14-7 lead that stood up until the fourth quarter.
“We did not have a good first half offensively,” Luther Prep football coach Justin Gregorius said.
Luther Prep put together a long drive in the fourth quarter to tie it up. Kieselhorst, who finished 5-of-15 for 126 yards, hit junior tight end Zachary Gregorius for first down yardage on a third-and-13 play, then found de Galley for a 30-yard touchdown. Soloviyov’s point after tied the game.
In the final minute, Luther Prep junior defensive back Silas Steinbrenner intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the Columbus 30.
The Phoenix ran a few plays to get near the goal line, spiking the ball to stop the clock along the way. Soloviyov’s winning kick from the left hash sent the Phoenix home with their fifth win of the season.
“That was very nice,” coach Gregorius said. “I am really proud of our guys, just proud of everyone tonight. Really proud.”
The Phoenix travel to face Lake Mills in the regular season finale next Friday needing a win to become playoff eligible.
“We are treating every game like a playoff game,” coach Gregorius said.
“This is the first time we beat Columbus on their field. A lot of firsts tonight. Lots of guys stepped up and made big plays. I’m very happy for the boys.”
Senior running back Preston Borchardt rushed 13 times for 78 yards for the Phoenix, while de Galley added three catches for 85 yards and Zachary Gregorius added two catches for 41 yards.
