SVM earns General Excellence Award
SPRINGFIELD – Sauk Valley Media was among the top newspapers in Illinois to be honored Friday at the Illinois Press Association’s annual convention in Springfield, picking up first place in its division for General Excellence.
More than 100 daily and nondaily newspapers competed in 44 editorial categories in the contest. The Alabama Press Association judged the more than 2,400 editorial entries.
Of SVM’s entries, which included its coverage of the shooting at Dixon High School on May 16, judges wrote: “The whole newsroom scrambled after gunfire broke out at a local high school, resulting in multiple pages of compelling detail and reaction. Community journalism at its finest.”
The IPA’s and Associated Press Managing Editor’s General Excellence awards were announced Friday during the convention, where SVM also picked up previously announced IPA and APME awards.
In the IPA contest, SVM won two first-place awards, one in the Sports Photo – Portrait/Personality category and one in the Special Section category; two third-place awards in the Photo Series and Spot News categories; a third-place award for Single Page Design; and a second-place award for Headline Writing.
In the APME contest, SVM earned first place for Headline Writing; and three second-place awards in the Spot News Photo, Sports Feature Photo, and Picture Story categories.
