WATCH: Video feature on Husker DL, former Navy SEAL Damian Jackson
The Navy has a video series called “Forged By the Sea,” and the latest edition is a feature on Nebraska defensive lineman Damian Jackson, a four-year veteran of the Navy SEALs.
Jackson, a Las Vegas native, did not play football in high school before joining the military. Once he was out, he came to Nebraska and redshirted in 2017. As a redshirt freshman this fall, Jackson appeared in one game, seeing snaps in the second half Oct. 27 against Bethune-Cookman.
Strength coach Zach Duval in the video addresses the challenge Jackson faces playing football for the first time at this level, saying, “He’s using the qualities he has – work ethic, toughness, mental fortitude – and he’s breaking through some of those barriers.”
Adds head coach Scott Frost, “How tight a team is has a direct correlation on how much you win. Every decision they make should be based on what’s best for the guy to their left and the guy to their right. Having a guy like Damian who’s lived that in a military setting is a great example for us to follow. ...
“A lot of our players on our football team in the history of Nebraska football are treated like heroes around the state of Nebraska. But I tell the kids in the state of Nebraska that if you want a hero to look up to, it’s Damian.”
