Bengals QB Akili Smith Injured
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Akili Smith, starting at quarterback for Cincinnati in place of Jon Kitna, was sidelined in the second quarter Sunday with a strained left hamstring.
Smith led the Bengals on a 20-play, 12-minute scoring drive in the first quarter, but left soon after. The team said at halftime of the game with the New York Jets that Smith would not return.
Kitna, sidelined with a sprained finger on his right hand, was forced to take over. Veteran Scott Mitchell is the Bengals’ third quarterback.
Smith finished 4-for-6 for 35 yards and rushed five times for 20 yards.
