SEATTLE (AP) _ The Seattle Mariners on Tuesday exercised their 1999 option on designated hitter Edgar Martinez' contract. Martinez will return next year for his 13th major league season with Seattle.

The one-year option reportedly is worth $3.5 million.

Martinez, 35, finished the 1998 season with a .322 batting average, 46 doubles, 29 home runs, 102 RBIs and 106 walks. He holds the Mariners' club-record career average of .318.

This was the fourth consecutive season Martinez has hit .320 or higher, and the fourth straight season he had 100 RBIs and 100 walks.
