ASHBURN, Va. (AP) _ The Washington Redskins cut five-time Pro Bowl kick returner Michael Bates on Tuesday to save money under the salary cap.

The move will save the team about $750,000 under this year's cap. Bates signed a two-year, $1.3 million contract a year ago.

Bates was one of five players the Redskins left exposed in last month's expansion draft, but he was not selected by Houston.

Carolina cut Bates for the same reason last year, even though he had made five straight Pro Bowl appearances with the Panthers.

Bates averaged 23.5 yards last season with the Redskins.
