So. Ill. FB Player Killed in SUV

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Southern Illinois wide receiver Charles Teague died Friday after the sport utility vehicle he was driving overturned several times on an interstate.

Teammate Brian Broussard, a defensive lineman who was with Teague, was treated at a hospital and released.

The two also had been teammates at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans.

Jackson police spokesman Robert Graham said the accident took place at 10:25 p.m. Thursday ``when for some undetermined reason the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip several times.″

He said accident investigators were looking into the reasons for the fatal crash.

``An accident of this nature is devastating,″ said SIU head football coach Jan Quarless. ``We all _ coaches and players alike _ believe we are family which means we’ve lost a close member of our family.

``Charlie was a special person. He had never had many breaks in life, but had just recently been accepted into SIU’s architectural technology school.″

The 19-year-old Teague won a letter last season, had done well in spring drills and was expected to see a lot of action next season, according to Fred Huff, the sports information director at Southern Illinois.

Broussard was a defensive end last season but was being moved to an interior line position on defense.
