Man Facing Charges After School Property Damaged
TEWKSBURY -- A 19-year-old driver tore up the area around Heath Brook Elementary School on Sunday morning, police said.
Matthew Merrick, of Tewksbury, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of vandalizing property and being under 21 and in possession of alcohol.
“The Tewksbury police were called to the area of the Heath Brook Elementary School and Joanne Drive at 12:30 a.m. for a report that a vehicle was tearing up the lawns, streets, and parking lot,” stated a press release.
Police photos show damaged lawns, a mud-splattered car and tire marks on the basketball court at the school.
It was the first of two vandalism arrests in town this week. On Tuesday, police arrested 29-year-old Joshua Chisholm, of Lowell, for 20 counts of vandalizing property and two counts of vandalizing a memorial. Chisholm is alleged to have tagged various business signs, town property and the 9/11 Memorial over the course of several months.
A police report says Merrick had two bottles of Dr. McGillicuddy’s grape liquor in his pocket when he was arrested, though he denied it was his.
Merrick was released on personal recognizance at his arraignment Monday in Lowell District Court.
