Obituary for prolific letter writer begins ‘To The Editor’

August 10, 2018

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The obituary for a prolific writer of letters to the editor at a Syracuse newspaper begins with three familiar words: To the Editor.

John Brule’s family decided that the former Syracuse University professor’s obituary should start the same way he began more than 60 letters he had published in The Post-Standard over the last 30.

Brule was 91 when he died Monday.

The family started the obituary “To the Editor” and it was published among the newspaper’s other obituaries this week. They also kept it close to the 250-word limit for letters to the editor.

His son, James Brule, told the newspaper that his father loved writing letters to the editor because he was “absolutely devoted to trying to improve the world.”
