Poole, Prince Sign With Phillies

December 15, 1998

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ The Philadelphia Phillies made a pair of minor moves before leaving the winter meetings Tuesday, agreeing to a $500,000, one-year contract with left-handed reliever Jim Poole and a $600,000, two-year deal with catcher Tom Prince.

Poole, 32, was 1-3 with a 5.29 ERA for San Francisco last season, then went to Cleveland, where he was 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA. Poole did not allow a run in six postseason appearances with the Indians.

Poole has a 19-11 career record with a 4.04 ERA in parts of eight major league seasons, making 354 relief appearances.

Prince, 34, hit .185 with no homers and five RBIs in 81 at-bats for Los Angeles last season as the backup to Mike Piazza and then Charles Johnson. He gets $300,000 in each of the next two seasons.

To make room on the roster, the Phillies designated first baseman Jon Zuber for assignment.
