Knapp battles tough conditions to win WPGA Sr. Amateur

November 10, 2018

Whipping, 20-plus MPH wind and cold temperatures were too much for several players Tuesday at Allegheny Country Club.

Scores ballooned as conditions worsened. A half-dozen players withdrew.

Super-fast greens and a tough course setup did not help matters.

Oakmont’s Sean Knapp, though, embraced the challenge like his tossle cap and layers of clothing embraced him.

Knapp held off Ed Podufal of The Kakhwa Club (Erie) on the first hole of sudden death to win the 87th Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Senior Amateur.

Podufal, who Knapp defeated in the title match to win the Pennsylvania Senior Match Play Championship in May, matched Knapp’s rounds of 75 and 72 for a 7-over-par total of 147 to reach the playoff.

Knapp made a par in the playoff on the 17th hole.

David Brown of St. Clair Country Club finished third at 8-over.
