PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ A car crashed through the window of a crowded convenience store Monday, killing a patron and injuring seven other people, police said.

Police said they don't know what caused the accident. Witnesses told police that the car may have been trying to avoid other vehicles.

Construction worker Joseph Dougherty said he was sitting at a table with three others at the WaWa market when he saw a car coming through a light.

''We all jumped up. Three of the guys went down and I just kept on heading for the front door,'' he said.

Dougherty said he had noticed a man sitting at a counter by the wall.

''The car just crushed him right to the wall,'' he said.

Police Capt. Edward DiMato confirmed the man was killed. The victim's identity was not immediately released.

The car's occupants included a man, a woman and two children, police said. It could not be immediately determined if they were among the seven injured.

Two were admitted to hospitals and five were released after treatment, authorities said.

The market at 38th and Spruce streets on the University of Pennsylvania campus has seating for patrons in a restaurant section.
