On the Market Riverfront colonial perched on a hill offering sweeping views of the Saugatuck River
WESTPORT — Some people like their drinks ‘on the rocks’ and some like their house ‘on the rocks,’ as in the case of the antique colonial at 33 Ferry Lane East.
This 16-room house is perched high on a knoll, atop tall outcroppings of rocks, giant boulders, and ivy-draped fieldstone walls. The house looks over the Saugatuck River; its residents having all the benefits of living on the riverfront without any of the headaches. This house is high enough from the water as not to fret about flooding and the river is easily accessible to launch a boat or kayak or paddleboard. In fact, this one-acre level and sloping property also features a private deep water dock, sandy beach area, and a 1,486-square-foot guest house with two bedrooms and two full baths at the river’s edge with a boat house underneath.
The name of the guest house is “Down the Hatch,” and there is another out-building, a free-standing home office or art studio called “In the Drink.” The office or studio has a covered front porch of its own, a paving stone patio, a window box, and it is plumbed for a bath. With the clever names of each structure one gets the sense that the current owners are boaters, enjoy a drink or two, love a good play on words, or have a great sense of humor. Perhaps all four. Boating and entertaining are certainly high on their list. Outside, on the expansive balcony-like bluestone patio, near the heated Gunite in-ground swimming pool, there is a custom-made bar designed to replicate the hull of a boat. That’s just one of the many features that makes “On the Rocks” an ideal spot for entertaining, and there is plenty of off-street parking for guests.
A game of croquette would be hard to play around the house itself because of the sloping topography but there is a perfectly level piece of the property close to the water’s edge on which to play croquette, badminton, horseshoes, and other lawn games.
The main house was built in 1820. The white house features distinctive beige trim and black shutters. The window trim that frames the 12-over-12, double-hung windows comprises casings with fluted millwork and dentil molding above it capped with keystones. Long window boxes sit at the base of the arched windows above the attached, under house two-car garage. A wisteria shrub is growing around the doorway into the garage.
A slate path lined with attractive landscaping and tiered gardens - including hydrangeas, spirea, roses, and holly bushes, leads from the long two-part driveway to the entrance into this beautiful home. Climb the stone and slate steps to the front door, which is framed by sidelights and a fanlight transom. Enter the front-to-back center hall foyer and behold the first image of this 4,516-square-foot house, which features custom millwork throughout and 10-inch baseboards. The powder room features a custom painted sink with a polished gold faucet. “The period-style built-ins and wainscoting are balanced throughout the home with high ceilings and light filled rooms,” the listing agent said. Still, as beautiful as the interior is the stellar exterior setting continues to be the focal point. River views can be enjoyed from many rooms.
To the right is the formal dining room with two built-in window seats, display shelving, and an antique bronze and crystal chandelier. To the left is the front-to-back formal living room, where there is a wood-burning red brick fireplace. French doors separate the living room from the great room, where there is a fieldstone fireplace, dry bar with a beverage center, a cathedral ceiling, a ceiling fan, cove lighting, skylights, and French doors to the patio and pool. The family room sits between the living room and gourmet kitchen and can also be accessed from the dining room.
Features in the kitchen include a center island topped with marble and room for four stools, a stainless steel subway tile backsplash, slate floor, built-in desk, high-end appliances - including a Viking Professional six-burner range and grill, and a door to the patio and pool. The butler’s pantry has a sink and Sub-Zero wine refrigerator.
Wake up to peaceful water views in the master suite on the second floor. It has two bathrooms and two closets. One bath features a Carrera marble floor, double vanity, and a frameless glass shower. The other has a slate floor and a shower with tumbled marble stone and built-in bench. The master also features a sitting room, built-in wood desk with file drawers, and back stairs to the kitchen for that midnight snack run. There are three more en suite bedrooms on the second floor.
On the third floor there is a bedroom with built-in shelves and skylights, a playroom with a built-in window seat, closets and storage areas, and a full bath.
The lower level has a mudroom with built-in cubbies.
All of this within walking distance of Longshore Country Club, Compo Beach, and the Saugatuck train station.
