August 7, 1999

MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) _ A downtown building facade collapsed Friday night into a shower of bricks and concrete, killing a woman and injuring a man.

The identity of the woman was not immediately available and there was no word on the condition of the survivor.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. when the facade of a one-story building housing a pharmacy and a Chinese restaurant collapsed.

Jason Bass, an employee of a nearby movie theater, told WWOR-TV he and others inside the theater heard a loud noise, ran outside, then called 911.

``It was a big, loud crash,″ he said. ``It shook the entire building.″
