NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are narrowly mixed on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down eight points. Gainers outnumber losers by about 5-3 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index is up six points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index has added one point.

Wall Street is trying to overcome what had began as a weak showing for overseas equities.

Asian stocks closed sharply lower and markets in Europe began the day with big declines before turning mixed.

The catalyst for the improvement in sentiment appears to be some positive comments from Goldman Sachs on computer chip makers.

Semiconductor shares had been routed yesterday after a warning from Taiwan Semiconductor.

Barring a triple-digit loss today, the Dow industrials stand to finish the week higher than where they started it, something the blue-chip index has accomplished only twice in the previous ten weeks.
