Akron man held on $2 million bond in death of girlfriend

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron man charged in the death of his girlfriend received a multimillion dollar during a Monday court appearance, court records show.

David A. Callaghan is charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse is the death of his girlfriend, Martha Robin Freitag.

Callaghan, 52, appeared in court via video from the Summit County Jail during a Monday morning arraignment.

Akron Municipal Court Judge Annalisa S. Williams set his bond at $2 million and appointed him an attorney, Akron Municipal Court records show.

Freitag, 53, was found Thursday in a shallow grave behind the couple’s home in the 600 block of Crouse Street, police said.

Freitag’s daughter told police she’d been unable to reach her mother since July 31, that her mother had an abusive boyfriend and she was afraid “he did something to her,” according to a police report.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the remains as Freitag Saturday, police said.
