ISU football: Bengals announce 12-game schedule for 2019
Idaho State released its 12-game schedule for the 2019 football season, which begins Thursday, Sept. 5 at Holt Arena.
The Bengals play five home games and seven road games, including at regional foes Utah (Sept. 14) and BYU (Nov. 16). ISU’s bye is Week 1.
ISU’s home slate features Division II Western State Colorado to open the season Sept. 5, plus Big Sky Conference opponents Portland State (Sept. 28), North Dakota (Oct. 12), Northern Colorado (Nov. 2) and reigning FCS national runner-up Eastern Washington on Nov. 9 — senior day.
The Bengals’ third nonconference opponent is Northern Iowa of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Bengals and Panthers face off on Sept. 21 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the programs’ first meeting since 1992.
Phenicie briefly coached at UNI following the 2016 season, before he was hired back at ISU to be the head coach in March 2017.
ISU’s road conference games are Oct. 5 at Montana, Oct. 19 at Idaho, Oct. 26 at Southern Utah and Nov. 23 at Weber State to end the regular season.
Idaho State’s 2019 conference opponents combined to go 39-44 last season. Weber State and Eastern Washington each won a share of the Big Sky championship and played deep into the FCS playoffs. Weber State was defeated in the quarterfinal round of the postseason tournament, while EWU fell in the title game against North Dakota State.
The last time ISU played a 12-game schedule was the 2014 season. The Bengals went 8-4 that year, finishing the season just outside the FCS playoff picture.
ISU also played 12 regular-season games in 2013 (3-9), 2008 (1-11) and 2003 (8-4). The Bengals haven’t played seven road games in a season since 2008.
The Oct. 5 game at Montana will be a homecoming of sorts for Bengals head coach Rob Phenicie. Phenicie was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Montana from 2003-09, helping the Grizzlies reach three national championship games under head coach Bobby Hauck — who returned to coach the Grizzlies last season after his coaching career took him elsewhere following the 2009 season.
Phenicie will also reunite with Northern Iowa on Sept. 21.
Game times will be announced at a later date.
