Man Stabs Crook Posing as Detective

August 24, 1990

NEW YORK (AP) _ A robber masquerading as a police detective was chased down a street by a group of angry residents and stabbed to death, police said Thursday.

The incident began Wednesday night when two men, identifying themselves as police and displaying a gold badge, gained entry to Carlos Rosario’s apartment in the borough of the Bronx, police said.

Once inside Rosario’s apartment, one of the men announced a robbery, and hit Rosario over the head with the butt of a gun.

″They took jewelry, and attempted to tie up the victim and his wife,″ said detective Lt. James Malvey.

Rosario began struggling with the robbers as his wife fled screaming from the apartment. The two men also ran, with Rosario chasing them, Malvey said.

Rosario and about 10 other residents pursued the men for about two blocks until one of the pair pulled a knife and stabbed Rosario in the shoulder. The other robber fled.

As Rosario ran for help to an ambulance parked across the street, an unknown man jumped from the group and stabbed the fake detective twice in the chest, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Tina Mohrmann.

The ambulance driver took the robber, who was identified as Jose Abreu, 49, to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Mohrmann said. Rosario was treated at Jacobi for his stab wound.

No arrests were made in the case.
