October 2, 2018

A Fort Wayne woman died Friday, more than two weeks after suffering critical injuries in a fire that prompted criminal charges against her estranged husband.

Lizzie Lee Caldwell’s death is a homicide, the Allen County Coroner’s office ruled today. There have been 36 homicides in Allen County this year.

Caldwell, 68, died from respiratory and renal failure because of thermal burns, the coroner’s office said in a statement following an autopsy.

Her husband, Eddie Lee Caldwell, 54, was arrested Sept. 12 : the day of the fire : with burglary with serious bodily injury, arson resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated battery and invasion of privacy.

The fire started about 9 a.m. at 5613 S. Harrison St.

A neighbor has said Lizzie Lee Caldwell arrived at her house hysterical, smelled of gasoline and was covered in burns to her shoulders, back and chest.
