NEW YORK (AP) _ Frank Bajak, bureau chief for The Associated Press in Bogota, Colombia, has been appointed technology editor for the news cooperative.

Bajak, who directed AP’s international coverage of the Y2K conversion, will coordinate coverage of high-tech trends and developments in the United States and abroad. His appointment to the new position was announced Thursday by Business Editor Darrell Christian.

``The assignment comes as newspapers, broadcasters and Web sites are expressing a burgeoning appetite for tech copy and devoting significant space to commercial, technical and social developments,″ Christian said.

Bajak joined the AP in Albany, N.Y., in 1983 and transferred to Newark, N.J., the following year. He moved to the International Desk at AP headquarters in New York in 1987 and to Berlin in 1993. He has been bureau chief in Bogota since 1996.

Bajak, 42, is a native of Bronxville, N.Y., and a graduate of Oberlin College.
