Man Kills Six People and Himself in Spree

November 28, 1996

BURGOS, Spain (AP) _ A spurned suitor went on a shooting rampage Wednesday, killing his would-be lover, his 93-year-old former mother-in-law and four other people, before turning the gun on himself.

Police said Juan Medina Gordillo, 53, used a hunting rifle in the killings.

The violence began in the afternoon when Medina shot Maria del Carmen Delgado, 22, her 19-year-old brother and her 15-year-old sister at their apartment in the industrial city of Burgos in northern Spain.

Medina then traveled to the tiny village of San Millan de Lara, 15 miles away, shooting the three victims’ mother, his former mother-in-law and his former sister-in-law.

Police said Medina apparently sought a romantic relationship with Delgado but was rejected. The three young people had complained to police in April that Medina had threatened them with a gun. Medina was detained and released.

Medina lived for 10 years with his former mother-in-law after divorcing his wife, but police did not immediately provide a motive for his attack on his former family members.
