Man embezzled about $80K in vet benefits

November 16, 2018

HUNTINGTON — A Huntington man admitted in federal court Tuesday to embezzling more than $80,000 of his brother’s veteran’s benefits for his own personal gain.

David Washington, 55, pleaded guilty to embezzlement. He faces a sentence of up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine at his February 2019 sentencing.

According to U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart, Washington had been appointed to oversee his brother’s finances, which included receiving and managing benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Washington failed to submit accounting reports, which led investigators to question his leadership.

Washington admitted to mismanaging over $81,000 in funds and said he had spent his brother’s benefits for his own personal expenses.
