Man arrested after theft of 2 bronze lampposts in Lafayette

July 31, 2018

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Police have arrested a 53-year-old man in connection with the theft of a pair of bronze lampposts dating to the 1920s that were unbolted and hauled away from outside an arts and cultural center in Lafayette.

The Journal & Courier reports police were able to identify the man from records and video collected from a scrap yard that paid $220, or $1.90 a pound, for nearly 117 pounds of bronze on July 23. It wasn’t clear if the scrapyard received both lampposts.

The charges the Lafayette man may face were not immediately clear. He has not yet appeared in court.

The heavy ornamental posts had stood since 1926 outside a former library that’s now the northwestern Indiana city’s Wells Community Cultural Center.
