Your CBD Store open in the Shoppes at Whiskey in Aiken

December 20, 2018

MaryEllen Olson is a big believer in the health benefits of cannabidiol, or CBD.

That is one of the reasons why she and her husband, Jim, decided to open a Your CBD Store in the Shoppes at Whiskey on Aiken’s Southside.

They launched the business Dec. 11.

Its operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The store is closed on Sundays.

“I suffered from nerve pain from surgery that I had about two years ago,” MaryEllen said. “I tried narcotics, which had horrible side effects, as well as ibuprofen, which also had terrible side effects. A friend of mine recommended a CBD cream. I purchased some of it, and it healed my nerve pain.”

A change in the Olsons’ lifestyle also led to them becoming the owners of a Your CBD Store. They were looking for something to do after giving up their careers and moving from Boston to Augusta this past July to help Jim’s parents.

Jim was a contractor who owned a small business, and MaryEllen worked as a health educator and a personal trainer at a YMCA.

“With my husband being a small business owner and me being a health educator, the store was a good fit for us,” MaryEllen said. “We are trying to bloom where we are planted and make a difference in the community.”

According to Jim, their new venture is affiliated with a group of other Your CBD Stores, which have “like-minded” business models, but are independently owned and operated.

The Olsons’ Your CBD Store offers a variety of products that contain CBD, which has been extracted from industrial hemp.

“We have CBD oil tinctures, water-soluble products and a full line of edible products,” MaryEllen said. “We also have a topical pain cream and a face cream with collagen and CBD in it. We have a 250-milligram cartridge that contains CBD that you can put on a vape pen. And we have pet products.”

CBD is a compound found in both hemp and marijuana, which come from the same plant species, but it “does not make you high,” MaryEllen said.

Instead, CBD is being used to treat many different kinds of medical problems, including anxiety, sleeplessness and inflammation.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex, which contains CBD, as a treatment for two rare and severe forms of childhood epilepsy.

Your CBD Store is at 152 South Aiken Lane.

“We have a boutique-style environment where clients can come in and I can educate them about the benefits of CBD,” MaryEllen said.
