FRIDAY, Sept. 28
In addition to practicing her set, spike and serve, Kerri Walsh Jennings is getting ready for her next tournament by sitting in on brand meetings, recruiting other players and making sure the musical acts are ready to go. The five-time Olympian and three-time beach volleyball gold medalist is one of the founders of the p1440 tour, a sports and lifestyle festival that will hold its first event in San Jose, California, on Sept. 28-30. In addition to playing — and planning to win, as would surprise no one who knows her — Walsh Jennings is also helping to run the event. By Jimmy Golen. UPCOMING: 750 words, photos by 3 a.m. Friday.
SUNDAY, Sept. 30
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Two of the world’s best endurance athletes, three-time Ironman world champion Mirinda Carfrae and her husband, Tim O’Donnell, sit back and relax on a soft white couch in an otherwise quiet house on a tree-lined street near the University of Kansas campus. In one corner sit their high-end time trial bikes, awaiting their next training session. Nearby, a box full of Hoka running shoes. And in the next room... a mountain of toys for baby Izzy, asleep upstairs. As the duo begins tapering down at their temporary training base for next month’s world championships in Kona, Hawaii, Carfrae and O’Donnell are doing so with the added stress of first-time parents. By Dave Skretta. UPCOMING: 1200 words, photos by 3 a.m. Sunday.
