Registration ends; early voting starts today

April 9, 2019

With early voting set to start today, the Allen County Voter Registration office has processed about 6,000 applications since Jan. 1.

Of those applications, 1,485 were new registrations, 3,638 were updated registrations and 826 were duplicates, according to Barry Schust, the Republican member of the Board of Voter Registration. Registrations were accepted until 11:59 p.m. Monday, so Schust said Voter Registration will spend the rest of the week processing applications.

The voter registration numbers for 2019 are similar to those reported for a similar time period in 2015. That year, the office handled 1,513 new registrations, 4,082 updates and 462 duplicates.

Voter registration for the May 7 primary closed Monday night. Registration will reopen May 21 for the Nov. 5 general election.

“Anything (submitted) after the deadline stays in limbo during our blackout period and then, once the election’s over, we enter all the data we received during this blackout time,” Schust said. “We’ll enter that data up until Oct. 7. Typically during that stretch we process more than we do from January to April.”

Schust said that during the 2018 county election, there were a lot of third-party registrations, meaning the department processed more applications last summer than usual.

“It was almost on par for what we would have done for a presidential election,” Schust said.

Early voting begins today at Rousseau Centre, at 1 E. Main St., which will be open for voting from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.

On May 1, satellite voting hours and some locations change. Rousseau Centre and satellite locations at Indiana Wesleyan University, Ivy Tech Community College’s Coliseum campus, Fort Wayne Public Safety Academy and Salomon Farm Park will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 1 through 3. On May 4, early voting locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Salomon Farm Park replaces Manchester University as an early polling location this year, according to Beth Dlug, Allen County’s director of elections.

Satellite locations close May 5. Rousseau Centre will be the only polling location open that day, Dlug said.
