Birmelin Sparks Desales Past Misericordia

Honesdale graduate Morgan Birmelin had 19 points and seven assists to lead DeSales University to a 68-59 win over Misericordia University in a women’s basketball game Monday.

Tessa Zamolyi’s layup for Misericordia with 6:54 left cut the Bulldogs’ lead to three but DeSales answered with a quick 8-0 spurt.

Scranton Prep graduate Bridget Walsh added 11 points and 14 rebounds for DeSales. Zamolyi had 15 points and eight rebounds for Misericordia (17-2) and Paige Wampole had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Valley Forge 75, Wilkes 70

At Phoenixville, the University of Valley Forge shot 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal a win.

Wilkes (7-12) cut a 12-point deficit to two with 56 seconds left but could not pull even.

Holy Cross graduate Gab Giordano had 29 points and 10 rebounds for Wilkes and Ashley Caster scored 12 points.

Men’s basketball

Luke Connaghan’s free throw with 1:12 left broke a tied score as DeSales University earned a 73-70 win over Misericordia University.

Julian Wing added a layup with 41 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead and Misericordia missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final seconds.

Noah Rivera had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Misericordia (11-8) and Mid Valley graduate Jason Kenny scored 19 points.
