Newspapers Identify Sole Survivor Of Vietnam Air Crash

November 24, 1992

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ A Dutch woman is the sole survivor of a recent airplane crash in Vietnam that killed 30 people, Dutch newspapers reported Tuesday.

Annette Herfkens, 31, was transferred to a hospital in Singapore last weekend, suffering from broken bones and internal injuries, according to the published reports.

The Vietnam Airlines plane, a Soviet-built Yak-40, crashed on Nov. 14 near the Vietnamese beach resort of Nha Trang.

Herfkens was taken to a local clinic, and villagers only informed the national authorities of her survival when she regained consciousness on Saturday, the Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf said.

Herfkens’ parents were notified Sunday by Vietnam Airlines in Ho Chi Minh City that their daughter had been found alive, the newspaper reported.

Herfkens was vacationing with her boyfriend, 36-year-old Willem van der Pas, who worked in Ho Chi Minh City. He was among the eight foreign passengers who died in the crash.
