Kelli Kuehne Advances to Third Round of U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Defending champion Kelli Kuehne won both of her matches Wednesday to advance to the third round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
Kuehne defeated Virginia Derby-Grimes, 32, of Montgomery, Ala., 3 and 2, in Wednesday afternoon’s second round, played on the 6,077-yard, par-71 Firethorn Golf Club. She defeated Lisa Educate, an English citizen who lives in San Jose, Calif., 2 up, in the first round.
``As the defending champion, I think that the other players may see me as the player to beat,″ said the 19-year-old Kuehne, of McKinney, Texas. ``The afternoon match was long, but overall, I am very confident in my game right now.″
Jenny Lee, 19, of Austin, Texas, and Grace Park, 17, of Phoenix, Ariz., who shared medalist honors with Kellee Booth, also advanced. Booth, 20, of Coto de Caza, Calif., lost to Diane Irvin, 31, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., 3 and 2, in the second round. Booth had defeated Kerry Zebick, 23, of West Chester, Ohio, in the first round, 3 and 2.
Lee defeated Ann Guiberson, 27, of Castle Rock, Colo., 4 and 2, in the first round and Riko Higashio, 20, of Gainesville, Fla., 1 up, in the second round. Park defeated defeated Felicia Galindo, 23, of Washougal, Wash., 5 and 3, in the first round and JoJo Robertson, 20, of Roswell, N.M., 1 up in 21 holes, in the second round.
Defending U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Ellen Port, 34, of St. Louis, defeated Marla Jemsek, 27, of Oviedo, Fla., 2 and 1, in the first round. Port defeated Jenny Chuasiriporn, 19, of Timonium, Md., 4 and 2, in the second round.
Brenda Corrie-Kuehn, 31, of Fletcher, N.C., defeated Caryn Wilson, 35, of Rancho Mirage, Calif., 1 up, in the first round before losing to Mizue Igarashi, 19, of El Cajon, Calif., on the 19th hole. Carol Semple Thompson, 47, of Sewickley, Pa., the 1973 Champion, was defeated by Sarah Comstock, 21, of Sioux Falls, S.D., 5 and 4, in the first round.
