Court won’t delay $28M verdict against Nebraska county
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A federal appeals court has refused to put on its hold its decision to affirm a $28.1 million jury verdict against a Nebraska county and two local sheriff’s deputies.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals issued its decision a week after the court denied Gage County’s petition to rehear its appeal. The case involves six people who were wrongfully convicted in the 1985 rape and murder of a Beatrice woman.
A jury in Lincoln awarded the damages in 2016. Gage County is trying to bring the case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Gage County Board of Supervisors Chairman Myron Dorn says county officials are still trying to determine how quickly they’ll have to pay the judgment.
